The first smartphones came onto the market about ten years ago. Today, life without them is unimaginable. According to a study by the University of Bonn, we use smartphone functions 55 times a day, send WhatsApp messages or e-mails every 18 minutes, surf the Internet or make phone calls. Smartphones are personal assistants, they hold the knowledge of the world ready at any time, they are cameras, video cameras and compasses. They are extremely practical and promote flexibility at work and in leisure time, but can also become a stress factor and endanger our health.

The boundaries between private and professional life become blurred, between what is necessary and wasted time. For many, the pressure to stage themselves via social media is growing. Can virtual participation become a substitute for real closeness? Or are we losing sight of reality by constantly looking at our mobile phones? Are all young people and adults who can no longer put their mobile phones aside for fear of missing out on something at risk of becoming addicted? What should be done to restore or maintain balance?
